Psychogeography – Week 5 (Including Reflection)

Tuesday

Before presenting my presentation I had started to panic due to the fact that we only had 6 minutes to talk about our final outcome, but also because when setting it up my presentation didn’t convert into a PDF properly. From all this happening I had got myself in a state where when it came to talking I couldn’t get the words out my mouth, for what I was trying to say in front of everyone about my design. However, coming towards the end of the presenting, my nerves had slightly stopped and I could feel myself calming down. Once I had finished talking everyone then gathered around the table where I had place my model so that they could have a look at, although everyone seemed to been drawn to what was written onto the wire that I had bent.

When looking at my model I talked to Craig about the wire that I had used for my memories as both tutors liked them, however I knew I needed to make more for the final outcome to be complete but wasn’t too sure on how many. From this it was discussed that if they are memories coming out of the house I should fit as much as I think will look best as long as you can read the writing which I felt I achieved very well as I tried to make them as clear as possible.

Throughout my presentation I had made slight changes before submitting making sure that there were no spelling mistakes as I had noticed a few, but also to make sure that I had my final outcome complete with a photograph to add into the slide as that was the only thing I was missing. From this I have produced my outcome showing the outline of Newport and descriptive words to describe the centre, whilst also showing my area of Newport showing where I lived and how it looked whilst including why I felt unsafe living in the house through memories.

Thursday – Reflection Post

Rebecca Chick – Psychogeography Final.

Overall when taking the module ‘Psychogeography’ I have really enjoyed it, although some parts of the project I have found very challenging and confusing. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Birmingham and learn the history about the city as I had only visited there once before hand, despite the wet and cold weather I had found it very interesting and wanted to get down into the project straight away. Throughout this project I feel that I connected to the module brief very well due to my final outcome and what I have achieved. But also understanding the terms of what psychogeography meant when put together.

I think because I engaged into the module each week my final outcome I produced went really well, as at the start I was very confused as to what we were meant to produce and how I would be able to present it in such a short amount of time as it takes me time to get into each project. However I felt that there were parts of my design that went really well, which were the print out versions of my area of Newport and also the outline of Newport in a map due to having a lot of experience with Photoshop I was able to complete them very quickly at the best quality and move onto the next part my design without wasting time. The part of my design that I was extremely happy, was bending wire for the first time as you were able to understand what I was writing. But also how I used a needle to point out exactly where I lived from the old house onto both sections of my area and the map of Newport.

However there were some areas that I felt didn’t go as well as I would of hoped which was when bending the wire although I was very happy with the outcome it was the most challenging part I had to do, due to that fact I had never done it before and every time I was bending it would snap from how much pressure used. This had led me to become very frustrated as it took a long time for me to get use to the material. Another part that I felt wasn’t going very well was when I put all the wire onto the house as they kept on moving out of position that I had set them in but also get tangled together.

Overall when looking at my final outcome, if I had a second change or longer with the project there would be some slight changes that I would do differently next time. This of  when cutting out the outline of Newport I would use foam board instead of card, as I had found it very challenging to cut all the edges and curves out. As I feel that with foam board it would use less pressure and I would not have to take as many breaks in between due to my fingers getting sore. Another part of my design that I would do differently next time would be attaching the memories out of wire differently to the house model so they are more sturdy, whilst also adding more detail to the house model instead of it being all black.
